The building which now houses Slocum’s Bowl-O-Drome was built
in 1919 by Lewis Slocum, Sr. and was used as an auto repair garage. The property was converted into an 8 lane bowling alley in 1939. The alley was then bought by Lewis Slocum, Jr. in 1947. Lew acquired the neighboring bar in 1955, and added lanes 9 through 12 in 1958.
Slocum’s Bowl-O-Drome was one of the first bowling centers in Mercer County to do away with the pin boy when Automatic Pinsetters were installed in 1957. Lew’s son, Lewis III, better known as Chip, began running the center in 1984. The wooden lanes and approaches were modernized to Brunswick Armor Plate in 1983, and Automatic Scorers were installed six years later. The center has remained pretty much the same since then, with minor cosmetic changes here and there, which includes repairs due to a car crash into the front of the building in October of 1993.
In January 2000, construction began to extend the bar area into what is now Sloc’s Grille. The latest additions to Slocum’s has been new masking units over the pinsetters in 2000, carpeting the walls of the center in the Summer of 2003, and adding new Steltronic automatic scoring in October of that year.
In April of 2008, we are incorporating all of our services into one name which represent the rebirth of a new generation, Slocum’s Bowling Bar and Grille.
